Doug Bowl 2012

Mark is lagging again on updating the video and sending out the e-mail. But you should know by now that it’s that time of year again!

Doug Bowl 2012 – Sunday, January 29. Sinsheimer Field. 12:00 noon.
Weather Forecast: 56, no rain. The Line: Longhairs by 14.

The Longhairs look to make it five in a row this year, and looked very strong last year, but questions remain:

Longhair playmaker Phil P. will be out with knee surgery. Can the Longhairs fill the gap?
Will Johno be back for the Longhairs?
Will Gator be back for the Shorthairs, and if so, can the Longhairs counter?
Can the Longhair young’uns take charge again this year?
Andrew was shamed into SAYING he will play for the Shorthairs, but will he?
Will footwear be the factor it was last year?
Kevin?
Will Doug ever show again? Scott A? Kulap? You?

Remember:
It’s flag football now. Practice your spin moves. And grabbing at air.
You NEED to play.
No cleats.
Video after.

DBowl 2011 Recap and Highlights

The Doug Bowl is now a flag football game! There were some issues at first:

Nevertheless the Doug Bowl has been transformed. But the outcome of the game always remains the same.

It didn’t start well for the Shorthairs. After letting the opening kickoff roll out of bounds without a return, they went four and out, barely crossing midfield. It didn’t take long for the Longhairs to take advantage of the field position. One play. Em’s first of four touchdowns.

7-0 Longhairs.

The Shorthair offense did not respond well.

Then they unleashed their secret weapon: The Punt! Suddenly it was 7-2, and the Shorthairs were getting the ball back.

Suddenly the momentum shifts. Johnny G is left open deep, and it’s a 9-7 Shorthair game.

And then, as the Longhairs attempt to answer, it’s JG again, this time with the INT.

Which the Shorthairs capitalize on with a broken play for a Mark R. rushing TD. And now it’s 16-7 and the Longhairs are reeling.

Not to worry. The patented Longhair Quickstrike Offense ™ scored on the first play after the kick. This time it’s Mark C. on a pitch, throwing the first pass of his long and storied Doug Bowl career. Second TD for Em. 16-14.

But then after the Longhairs force another Shorthair punt, Mark can’t find the grip…

…and the Longhairs find themselves buried deep. And then turn the ball over. Johnny G with another Shorthair INT.

But the sputtering Shorthair offense spends 8 plays going nowhere until Stevie picks one off for the Longhairs…and it’s all (well, mostly) Longhairs from here.

They march down the field and finish the first half with a Joel pitch-and-catch TD to retake the lead 21-16.

Second Half: The fireworks begin.

Stevie sets up the next Longhair score with a looong pass to Joel.

And then takes the pitch from Joel, throwing a TD pass to Em (#3). 28-16.

The Shorthair offense was in disarray. Frank decided just to give the ball back to Phil, since he couldn’t think of anything else to do.

So on the next play, Phil finds Mark open deep behind Johnny. It was the shoes, man. And the old Longhair Pumpfake and Go. It almost never fails. 35-16.

While the Shorthair offense was ineffective, the defense was strong at times. Another INT.

But the Shorthair offense again spent 8 plays getting close, and Stevie’s pick stops what little momentum they had.

But wait! Mark R wrastles the ball away from Joel for a beauty INT, and the Longhairs give it right back.

But wait! Flags fly, people die! The play is called back on a penalty. The Longhairs keep the ball, and Phil connects with Stevie for what should be a TD. But Stevie hotdogs it, and Mark is forced to finish the drive, catching a most excellent TD pass from Joel. 42-16.

Joel follows with an INT at the Longhair goal line.

The tenacious Shorthair defense forces their second safety of the contest! 42-18

But the Shorthair offense sputters around and ultimately surrenders another INT. This one is returned for a TD by Joel after a fine juggling catch. 49-18.

Finally the Shorthair offense connects to close the gap to 49-25.

But the Longhairs answer almost immediately; Phil connecting with his boy Em for Em’s 4th TD of the day. 49-25.

And that’s where the battery died, and we had to switch cameras, and I have to find that tape. The Shorthair defense showed the offense how to score, on an INT return for a TD and another to set up a scoring strike from JG on another broken play (quit the baby hiking Shorthairs), and Mark R caught another beauty pass from JG (who has to named Shorthair MVP) for a TD right over Mark C’s tight coverage. Longhair Mark retaliated by catching a TD pass at the buzzer to add insult to injury. Final: 63-46 Longhairs.

Here’s the last three minutes plus some after-game excuses from Frank. You can also watch Joel having flag-pulling issues.

Here’s the whole thing, if you dare…
