Longhairs 49 Shorthairs 42.
But the score was closer than the game.
Five rookies (Both sides). Three sacks (Longhairs). And a kick return for a touchdown (Shorthairs). All Doug Bowl records. But still the numbers didn’t add up for the Shorthairs.
With two ringers from the fire department (one a football coach), the Shorthairs looked strong before the opening kickoff, which they received and returned to midfield. All seemed well. And then… Phil steps in front of the intended receiver…
That’s the first play from scrimmage, by the way. Two plays later, it was 7-0.
Another kick. Time for the Shorthairs’ second play from scrimmage.
D’oh. After a couple of dropped passes, and a questionable dual pass play, the Longhairs made it 14-0 with the old fake reverse.
At least the next series was a series. But the Shorthairs went mostly backwards, and were forced to give up the ball on downs.
One play later, it was 21-0.
After three plays, the Shorthairs punted. Things looked grim. With a big lead, the Longhairs busted out a classic on the next series.
But for the first time in the game, the Longhairs gave up the ball on downs. And the Shorthairs came roaring back on the first play.
But the celebrating was short-lived. The Longhairs marched down the field, and scored on another classic Longhair play.
But then, just when the game seemed out of reach, there was a Doug Bowl first: a kick return for a touchdown. The Flying Wedge worked!
28-14. And we finally had a game.
Ummmm. But not for long. Watch Joel artfully avoid the rush and connect with Johno, to make it 35-14.
The Longhairs were on cruise control in the second half. I’ll let Stevie call the next few plays.
The next clip pretty much sums up the game, as the Shorthair D falls for the pump-fake (and will again soon), and the Longhairs go up 42-14. I believe Frank’s expression captures the Shorthair’s feelings.
But the Shorthairs still had some life left. After the kick, they mounted a fine drive, capped by Mark’s TD catch and run between two befuddled Longhair defenders. 42-21.
So it was time for a rerun of that pump-fake play.
49-21. (to be continued…)
